Ceramic coating in India has become the most over-promised car
care product of the decade. “9H hardness”, “scratch-proof”,
“diamond-like protection” — the marketing has gone so far that a lot of
customers walk in expecting their car to be physically indestructible
after the coating.
That’s not what ceramic coating does. As a 3M Platinum Partner for

applied 1,200+ ceramic and graphene coatings. Here’s what they actually
do, and what they don’t.
What Ceramic Coating Actually
Is
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer — usually SiO2 (silica) or SiC
(silicon carbide) based — that bonds chemically to your car’s clearcoat
and cures into a thin, hard, transparent layer. Thickness is typically
1–3 microns. PPF, by comparison, is 150–210 microns. That tells you
something already about scratch protection.
What ceramic genuinely does:

Hydrophobic surface — water beads up and rolls off, taking dirt
with it -
Significant gloss enhancement — paint looks visibly deeper and
wetter -
Chemical resistance — bird droppings, tree sap, road tar, light
acid rain don’t etch the paint as easily because the ceramic takes the
chemical contact instead of the clearcoat -
UV resistance — slows oxidation of paint pigments under sun
exposure -
Easier cleaning — wash time drops by half because nothing bonds
to the surface -
Sacrificial protection — the coating itself wears down over
years, taking abrasion that would otherwise hit the paint
What Ceramic Coating Does NOT
Do
Anyone who tells you ceramic coating is scratch-proof is selling you
something. Three honest facts:

Ceramic does not stop rock chips. A stone hitting your bumper at
80 km/h goes through the coating and into the paint exactly like there’s
no coating at all. That’s PPF’s job, not ceramic’s. -
“9H pencil hardness” is a coating-test standard, not a
knife-resistance rating. Your keys will still scratch a ceramic-coated
panel. So will branches, valet poles, and anything harder than the
coating. -
Ceramic does not last forever. 1-year, 3-year, 5-year, 9-year
coatings exist, but real-world performance in Delhi NCR (high heat +
dust + pollution) often runs 70–80% of marketed lifespan unless
maintained correctly.

Ceramic Coating — In Numbers

What’s the Difference?
Graphene coatings are the newer evolution. They include graphene
oxide in the formulation, which adds three things over standard
ceramic:

Higher hardness ratings on the surface, slightly improved scratch
resistance -
Often slightly longer durability for the same warranty

So — Does It Really
Protect Your Paint?
Yes, against the right kind of damage — chemical etching, UV
oxidation, water spotting, light contaminants, gloss loss. Not against
impact damage. If you’re choosing only one form of protection and you
mostly drive in city, ceramic alone covers you. If you do expressway
runs, ceramic alone is not enough — you need PPF on impact zones with
ceramic over the rest.
