How to judge whether your PPF was installed correctly — 12
specific things to check before you drive away.

Genuine film + bad installer = bad result. Cheap film + great
installer = still bad result. The film is half the equation. The other
half is the install. And install quality is something most customers
don’t know how to evaluate.
Here is the exact pre-delivery checklist we use ourselves at
Detailing Shoppe — and what you should check at any shop before you
accept the car back.
Before the
Install Even Begins — Studio Conditions
PPF needs a controlled environment. Walk the bay before you sign:

Is the floor clean? Dust on the floor becomes dust on your
film. -
Is the bay enclosed? Open-air installs catch wind-borne particles
between film and paint. -
Is there proper LED lighting at multiple angles? Installers can’t
see imperfections in poor light, so they’ll miss bubbles. -
Is air filtration active during install? Quality studios have
HEPA-grade filtration. -
Is the bay temperature controlled? PPF behaves very differently
at 22°C vs 40°C — Indian summer ambient bays cause adhesive to set too
fast.
If the install is happening in a dusty, open, hot space, no installer
in the world can deliver a clean job.
Surface Prep
— The Step That’s Almost Always Skipped
Before any film touches the car, the panel needs:

Foam wash and rinse

Clay-bar treatment to lift embedded contaminants from the
clearcoat -
Iron-fallout decontamination if necessary

IPA (isopropyl alcohol) wipe-down to strip oils and
waxes -
Inspection under detailing light
Skipping any of these traps contaminants under the film. Six months
later, you’ll see them as dark spots through the PPF — and there’s no
way to fix it without removing and reinstalling.
Watch your installer do this prep, or ask for photos of each
step.
During Install — What a
Pro Looks Like
Visual signs of a competent install:

Slip solution and tack solution mixed correctly — installer
should be using two spray bottles -
Film cut from a CAD-precise pattern, not freehand-sized at the
car (most quality films come with car-specific pre-cut
templates) -
Squeegee strokes — even pressure, overlapping, slow and
deliberate, not rushed -
Proper edge tucking around door jambs, headlight gaps, panel
seams -
Heat gun used to conform film around complex curves — bumper
corners, mirror caps -
Two-installer team for larger panels (hood, roof) —
single-installer hood wraps almost always have visible seams or stretch
marks

Pre-Delivery Inspection (Use This At Any Shop)
Walk the car under bright light and check:
1. No air bubbles visible — even small ones become permanent 2. No
water/silvering trapped between film and paint — eliminated by good
squeegee technique 3. No dust or fibre particles trapped under film 4.
Edges properly tucked into panel seams, not visible from outside 5. No
film overhang past panel edges 6. No stretch marks, especially at bumper
corners and curved fenders 7. No “orange peel” texture in the film (sign
of bad squeegee technique) 8. Headlight wraps fully sealed at edges 9.
Mirror cap wraps don’t interfere with electric folding 10. Door cup
protection (small clear films behind handles) installed if part of the
package 11. Rocker panel coverage extends fully under the door, no
exposed paint stripe 12. Self-healing demo on a test scratch — it should
disappear under heat within 60 seconds
If any of these fail, do not accept delivery. A reputable shop will
gladly redo the affected panel.

Should Walk Away With
At pickup, you should receive:

Brand E-warranty certificate registered against your VIN,
downloadable from the brand’s site -
Itemised invoice listing brand, thickness in microns, warranty
period, and panels covered -
Photos of the sealed film roll on the day of install

Aftercare guide (don’t wash for 7 days, don’t pressure-wash
edges, etc.) -
Free 12-month inspection appointment booked
If you don’t get these, the install isn’t complete.
