A good quality paint protection film (PPF) on a car is designed to last for years, not months — at Detailing Shoppe our PPF carries a 5 years warranty. How long your film actually holds up in practice depends on three things: the grade of film you choose, how well it was installed, and how the car is parked, washed and driven through Delhi NCR conditions.
Below is an honest breakdown of what shortens a film’s life, what extends it, and what you should realistically expect from PPF on Indian roads.
What The Warranty Period Actually Covers
The warranty on PPF is a manufacturer commitment against defects in the film itself — things like yellowing, cracking, bubbling, peeling and loss of clarity. Our PPF comes with a 5 years warranty, and PPF at Detailing Shoppe starts from Rs 30,000 depending on the coverage you choose and the size of the car.
What a warranty does not cover, anywhere, is damage you inflict on the film after it goes on: a kerb scrape that tears the edge, a screwdriver dragged across the bonnet, or film that has been picked at and lifted. That is worth understanding before you buy, because it is the difference between a film that “failed” and a film that was damaged.
The Three Things That Decide How Long Your PPF Lasts
1. The film itself
Not all PPF is the same product. The established brands — 3M, XPEL, LLumar — build their films in layers, with a top coat engineered to resist staining and to self-heal light swirl marks with heat. Detailing Shoppe is a 3M accredited installer, which means the material and the fitment both come from a controlled supply chain rather than an unbranded roll bought by the metre.
Cheap, unbranded film is where most of the horror stories come from. It goes on looking identical on day one. The difference shows up in the second summer, when the film has gone amber over the bonnet and the edges have started to lift.
2. The quality of installation
Installation matters as much as the film. Poorly wrapped edges are the single most common failure point — if the film is not tucked properly around panel gaps, bonnet lips and door edges, dirt and water work their way underneath and the film starts lifting from the corner inward. Once an edge lifts, the whole panel is compromised.
This is also why a rushed fitment is a false economy. Proper installation means a decontaminated, corrected paint surface, a controlled indoor bay so dust does not get trapped under the film, and adequate curing time before the car goes back out.
3. How the car lives
This is where Delhi NCR gets specific. Our conditions are genuinely harder on a car’s exterior than most:
- Summer heat. A car parked in open sunlight through a Noida May, with surface temperatures far above ambient, ages any film faster than one that sleeps in a basement or covered parking.
- Monsoon and hard water. Rain here is not clean rain. Water sits on the panel, dries, and leaves mineral deposits behind. Left to bake on, those spots become very difficult to remove.
- Dust and construction grit. NCR air carries a lot of suspended particulate. Wiping a dusty car with a dry cloth is effectively sanding it — that is what puts fine scratches into the film’s top coat.
- Bird droppings and tree sap. Both are acidic and both etch. On unprotected paint they can leave a permanent mark; the film is doing exactly its job by taking that hit, but it should still be washed off promptly.
- Road debris. Stone chips off highway traffic, speed breakers scraping the front bumper, and tight parking in NCR markets are precisely what the film is there to absorb.
How To Get The Full Life Out Of Your Film
- Wash regularly with the two-bucket method — one bucket for the soap, one to rinse the mitt so you are not dragging the same grit back over the panel.
- Use a pH-neutral car shampoo. Harsh detergents and dish soap strip the film’s top coat over time.
- Never wipe a dry, dusty car. Rinse first, always.
- Remove bird droppings, sap and fuel spills as soon as you spot them rather than at the next wash.
- Keep pressure washers away from the edges. A high-pressure jet held close to a film edge is one of the fastest ways to start a lift.
- Park in shade or covered parking wherever you realistically can.
- Consider a ceramic coating over the film. A coating on top of PPF makes the surface slicker, so dust and water release more easily and washing becomes gentler. Ceramic coating at Detailing Shoppe starts from Rs 9,000 and carries a 3 years warranty.
Signs Your PPF Is Reaching The End Of Its Life
Film does not fail overnight. Watch for these, in roughly the order they appear:
- Edges lifting or peeling back at panel gaps and door handles
- A yellow or amber cast, most visible on white and silver cars and on horizontal panels like the bonnet and roof
- Cloudiness or haze that does not clear after a proper wash
- Scratches that no longer self-heal in the sun the way they used to
- Staining that will not come out — usually where water spots or droppings were left too long
If you are seeing edge lift on one panel only, that panel can usually be addressed on its own rather than redoing the whole car. Get it looked at early — a small lift left alone tends to spread.
Does Colour PPF Last As Long?
Colour PPF is a colour-change film, so it does the protective job of clear PPF while also changing how the car looks. Our colour PPF carries a 5 years warranty, and pricing starts from Rs 55,000 for black, Rs 72,000 for a single colour, and Rs 98,000 for a colour-shift finish. Fitting takes 3-4 days, because a full colour change is far more involved than a clear front-end job.
The care rules are identical to clear PPF — same washing discipline, same attention to edges, same benefit from parking out of direct sun.
PPF Or Ceramic Coating?
They are not competing products, and this trips a lot of people up. Ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a hard, hydrophobic layer on the paint: it makes the car easier to clean, adds gloss and helps with water spotting. It does not stop a stone chip.
PPF is a physical urethane film with real thickness. It absorbs impacts — stone chips, light scuffs, trolley knocks, scratches from a careless parking attendant. If your concern is chips on the bonnet and bumper from highway driving, that is a PPF problem, not a ceramic one. Many owners do both: film on the high-impact panels, coating over the top.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does PPF last?
Our PPF is backed by a 5 years warranty against defects such as yellowing, cracking and peeling. Real-world life depends on film grade, installation quality, and how the car is parked and washed — a garaged, regularly washed car will hold its film far better than one parked in open sun and wiped dry.
Does PPF damage the paint when it is removed?
Quality film applied to healthy factory paint is designed to be removable without harming the surface underneath, and removal should be done by an installer rather than pulled off at home. The risk sits with repainted panels or paint that was already failing before the film went on — worth flagging to us at inspection if the car has had bodywork.
Can PPF be applied to only some panels?
Yes. Most owners start with the high-impact areas — bonnet, front bumper, front fenders, mirrors — because that is where stone chips actually land. You can also go for full-body coverage. PPF at Detailing Shoppe starts from Rs 30,000, and the final figure depends on how much of the car you cover and the size of the vehicle.
Will PPF hide scratches that are already on my car?
No — film is clear, so anything under it stays visible, and in some cases becomes more obvious. That is why paint correction happens before the film goes on, not after. Once film is applied, correcting the paint underneath means removing the film first.
Do I need to change how I wash the car after PPF?
Mostly you need to wash it properly: two buckets, a pH-neutral shampoo, no dry wiping, and keep a high-pressure jet away from the film edges. Bird droppings and sap should come off promptly rather than waiting for the weekend wash.
Is PPF worth it for Delhi NCR driving conditions?
If the car sees highway running, tight market parking, construction dust and a full monsoon each year, film is doing continuous work — it takes the chips, etching and scuffs that would otherwise be going into your paint. Cars that live almost entirely in covered parking and see light city use get less out of it.
