Does PPF really work ? The Short Answer: Yes, Real PPF Works. But the Industry Has a Scam Problem.

Genuine Paint Protection Film — a 150 to 210-micron Aliphatic TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) sheet bonded to your paint with acrylic adhesive — absolutely works. It physically takes hits that would otherwise reach your paint: stone chips on the Yamuna Expressway, a rickshaw scraping past you in Sector 18 market, a careless trolley at a mall basement, swirl marks from poor wash technique, even bird droppings and tree sap that would otherwise etch into your clearcoat in 48 hours of Noida summer heat.

That’s the part that works. The scam isn’t PPF. The scam is what some shops sell you and call PPF.

What’s Actually Sold as “PPF” in India (And Why Half of It Is a Lie)

Here’s a list of things we have personally seen sold as “PPF” to unsuspecting customers across Delhi NCR in the last year:

  • Vinyl wrap pretending to be PPF (no self-healing, no impact protection, yellows in 6 months)
  • Matte lamination film — the same stuff used on visiting cards — sold as “matte PPF”
  • Cheap Chinese PVC films branded as “premium imported” at ₹15,000–₹25,000 for a full car
  • 80–100 micron films sold at the price of 190 micron films
  • “Lifetime warranty” e-certificates from companies that don’t have an India service network

PPF vs CERAMIC

Real PPF, made of 100% Aliphatic TPU with proper acrylic adhesive, does not exist below a certain price point. If someone is offering you “full body PPF” for ₹20,000 on a sedan, you are not getting PPF. You are getting a problem your paint will pay for in 8–12 months.

How We Know It Works — A Real Case From Our Bay

In late 2024 a customer brought in his Toyota Innova Hycross for what he thought was a paint job. An auto-rickshaw had scraped his front bumper at a market crossing. We had installed Supreme Pro Plus 210-micron PPF on the bumper at delivery.

PPF Protects from scratches

When we removed the damaged section, the paint underneath was untouched. The film had taken the entire scrape. We replaced only half the bumper film. Total downtime: 1 day. Cost to him: a fraction of what he’d have paid otherwise. Without PPF, that same job is a 7–10 day insurance claim, ₹10,000+ in repair, and a permanent dip in resale value because the bumper now has a repaint history that any sharp buyer will spot with a paint depth gauge.

That is what PPF does. It absorbs the damage so your paint does not have to.

Where PPF Doesn’t Work (Because We’re Not Going to Lie to You)

PPF is not magic. It will not stop:

  • A real collision — anything past parking-speed contact will dent the panel underneath
  • Hailstones the size of golf balls (they dent the metal even with film)
  • Damage from chemical spills if not cleaned within reasonable time
  • Bad installation — air bubbles, lifted edges, contamination under the film

PPF protects from rock chips and scratches

And honestly? Not every car needs full body PPF. If you drive 5,000 km a year inside the city, full body PPF is overkill. We’ll often recommend partial coverage on impact zones (front bumper, hood, fenders, door edges, rocker panels, mirrors) and ceramic coating for the rest. That’s the “complete story” most shops don’t tell you, because they’re trying to upsell.

The Verdict

PPF is real. PPF works. The scam is in three places — fake film sold as PPF, dishonest shops that don’t disclose what they’re applying, and one-size-fits-all upselling. None of those are PPF’s fault.
